It’s no secret that Jerry Seinfeld loves cars. From his breakout web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, where some big names in comedy (and even President Obama) cruise around in classic cars, to his mammoth collection of classic, rare, and exotic cars (including one of the biggest Porsche collections in the world), he’s a bonafide car dude.

So it made big headlines last week when he auctioned off 17 of his cherished collectibles with Gooding & Co. in Florida, including 15 Porsches and two Volkswagens, netting him a whooping $22,244,500. His beloved 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder single-handedly sold for over $5 million, his 1959 Porsche 718 RSK went for almost $3 million, and his 1960 VW Beetle sold for twice its estimated price at $121,000 on the block.

These soaring figures certainly make one reflect on both the power of celebrity (I mean, it’s Jerry!), the power of nostalgia, and the power of joy. This roster of cars is not just a who’s who of legendary automotive icons, but they also, perhaps, twang drivers with a longing for a bygone era, and the cachet of rarity.

The Los Angeles Times reports Seinfeld as saying, “[T]he reason I wanted to bid these cars farewell in this way is really just to see the look of excitement on the faces of the next owners who I know will be out of their minds with joy that they are going to get to experience them.”

Classic car owner John certainly relates to the nostalgia factor of these beautiful relics of times past, reflecting “there’s a feeling today that these cars are getting out of reach for everyday people” — not every average Joe can drop a cool mil on a vintage Porsche. Turo, however, “offers a way for everybody to drive something truly extraordinary,” and experience that aforementioned Seinfeldian joy.
